This is a solo-journaling tabletop RPG, which means you'll be playing as a character in a story that can go down multiple paths.  While reading and playing along, you'll be writing down your responses to prompts and skill checks (i.e. rolling a die or pulling cards from a deck) to determine where your particular story goes.

Throughout the story, you'll make choices that open up certain paths or options... and close others. 

Deciding on the order to complete tasks, what path to take, or how to approach and obstacle will have a meaningful impact to both how your stats function and what you discover about the world.

You'll also meet NPCs that you can decide to leave behind or bring along.  By making certain choices in the presence of your companions, you'll impact their trust level, which affects the bonuses they offer and their willingness to follow you on your journey.  Watch out, though, because making a move to increase the trust with one companion could decrease the trust of another... or have other unintended consequences.

The choices you make and the trust of your companions ultimately determines your story's ending, and there are several endings, giving this game wonderful replay value.

This book has over 300 pages with hand drawn illustrated pages and space to either write or draw your response to prompts throughout the adventure.

This is a really fun idea. I was a fan of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books and this was nicely reminiscent of those.

Long ago, before our world, there was another. 

There was a Flood once, or so I have heard. It was vast and terrible in the way that only the greatest of disasters can be, a cataclysm so total in its destruction that when it swept the world, there was nothing left.

This is not the story of that Flood. This is not the story of how it came to pass, or what it broke, or what came after.

This is the story of the world that came before it, a world lost to the sands of time and the waters of inevitability. This is the story of when magic was material, and the ones like us were lions on the prairie. This is the story of Before the Flood.

Before the Flood 
is a map-making game for six players about working together to discover a world that existed long before our own. Each player will take on the mantle of one of the fundamental forces that shaped this world, using their own unique mechanics, tools, and perspective to create a map of the world that existed before it was all washed away.

The zine includes all the instructions needed for play, along with some instructions that are not meant to be used at all: the ritual for The Flood itself. Players read through this ritual of destruction before starting their story of creation, turning each new addition to the map into a mark of defiance in the face of fate.

The Flood will come, but you will still build, and there will still be beauty, and hardship, and lives to be led. 

Playing The Game:

Before the Flood runs in 2-4 hours and requires zero prep, making it ideal for one-shots, and can be used as a standalone game or worldbuilding for a larger campaign. It also caters to a range of playstyles: since each mantle has its own mechanics and role, players can choose how they want to be involved in the storytelling each time they sit down to draft a new map.

To play, you'll need the zine itself, some drawing supplies, and the specific tools used by each mantle: four stones, a coin, a book, some dice, a set of tarot cards, and a standard deck of playing cards.

Play begins with a ritual taking up of the mantles, the six fundamental forces players will embody while constructing the world of Before the Flood. With the knowledge of the inevitable flood ever-present, players will take turns using their unique aspect to bring together different parts of the story into one complete tale.

The world is built through the collaboration of six mantles: Land, Legend, Nature, Nation, Weal, and Woe.

Land is the mantle of the earth itself, carving valleys and building mountains. It is that which marks the map while the rest deliberate over details.

Land starts off each round of Before the Flood by casting colored stones onto a piece of paper, delineating areas of different altitudes. Land decides how these areas are marked to show this, and while the round continues onward and the other mantles take their turns, Land stays dedicated to their parchment, pen constantly moving to add various features. 

Legend is the mantle of histories, those stories that only become greater as they are lost. It is the adviser to both Nature and Nation, and that which marks the details that Land does not.

After Land has cast their stones and started the round of play, Legend flips their coin. On a result of heads, Nature will be called forth to act that round. On a result of tails, Nation will act instead.

Legend then flips through their book, stopping on whatever page they feel is right, before closing their eyes and dragging a finger down that page, again stopping when it feels correct.

The word or phrase that Legend lands on is what they'll use to help either Nature or Nation ascribe meaning to the landmark they discover.

Nature is the mantle of all that is wild and untamed, the magic and mundane that grows from that which is left untended. It is that which sprouts landmarks as a matter of course, growing ever larger as it does.

Each round, if Legend's coin flip lands on heads, Nature will be called to act.

Nature acts by rolling a singular, with their result corresponding to a list of features and items. They start with the smallest of the polyhedral dice, a four-sided die, and on a result of 4 they get to step up their die to the next size and reroll. This continues with each die; if they roll the highest result, Nature is able to step it up to the next size, all the way up to a 100-sided die.

Whatever result they get, Nature takes the corresponding item from their lists and consults with Legend to create a landmark, which Legend then places on the map.

Nature's roll also decides if Weal or Woe will be called forth to act that round. If the result is below a four, Woe gets to act. If it's a four or above, Weal gets to act.

Nation is the mantle of the forces of humanity, in all their glory and hubris. It is that which builds landmarks with structured purpose, forever looking to better its odds and create something more.

If Legend's coin flip lands on tails, Nation will be called to act instead of Nature.

Nation acts by playing their own dice game involving a pool of six-sided dice (d6) and matching the combination of results to tables of landmarks. They can add more dice to their pool to increase their chances, but in doing so scorn Weal and invite only Woe.

Once Nation has their combination for that round they find the correct d6 table and roll one more d6 to find out what the landmark is going to be, consulting with Legend to flesh it out and place it on the map.

Weal is the mantle of good fortune, sharing its joy with all those who would take it. It is that which pulls meaning from the arcane and promises the sunrise will come again.

If Weal has been called forth to act, they will pull three cards from a deck of tarot and interpret them together to create an omen of good fortune.

In Before the Flood the general meaning of each tarot card is listed out, alongside an omen already drawn out from that meaning. Weal's task is to take all three of these meanings and weave them together into one.

Whatever omen occurs Nature and Nation take a moment to describe how their people react to it together, and play continues into a new round starting again with Land. 

Woe is the mantle of ill fortune, but I ask you not to assume their intent. It is often the worst times that bring out the best in us, and while their game can be difficult to understand from the outside, they only seeks to bring the world closer together.

Finally, if Woe has been called forth to act, they will pull five cards from a standard 52 card deck and attempt to create the best standard poker hand they can. They are able to discard cards and redraw once per round. The jokers in the deck also act as wild cards, and can be used as any suit or number.

Once their hand has been created Woe consults their table to discover what omen has been called forth. After Woe has decided on what the omen is for this round, Nature and Nation come together and discuss how their people come together to overcome this trial, and how balance is reinstated to the land.

Then Land casts their stones and a new round begins.

As rumors spread out of proportion, the papacy becomes compelled to settle the veracity of alleged miracles or heresies.

Will the Friars uphold their oath? 

Rosewood Abbey is rooted in Walloon, Flemish, and European folklore often irreverent towards religion.

The game isn’t intended as a comment on contemporary religious beliefs and practices.

Plus, you know, they’re just super fun. So Hoodwink Games created PEN, a generic system for telling any story that stories fast and stays fun.

Most easy-to-learn RPGs are easy, but shallow rules and short manuals make gameplay… boring. Close communities are built around weeks and weeks of telling stories together and quickstart RPGs are just too rules-lite to stay satisfying for long.

Plus, other generic RPG classics like GURPS and Savage Worlds are super fun but still tailored to veteran audiences. No newbie wants to tackle those books alone. In practice, once character creation is over and players know what’s going on, maybe the systems are easy enough. But that first hurdle is just too high for casual players just looking for friends.

NO! Every textbook, from entry-level algebra to advanced calculus, started by teaching basic concepts. And what is a game manual if not just a textbook? You learn enough to get going, and then you keep advancing as you apply the concepts you’ve already learned. Eventually, you are confident enough to apply ALL the concepts in new and exciting combinations.

PEN works the same way. Modules advance players through the game, starting with a 5-page spread of rules, description of roleplaying concepts, and seven, pre-built characters to choose from. Then, as players play, players advance through the modules at their own pace, adding more complex rules systems and strategic options.

Every single step is designed to seamlessly sew roleplaying and mechanics into a tactical, fun, and intuitive ruleset your party will want to return to for years.

Module One opens by explaining the concept of an RPG. For new players, the idea of not having a board, cards, or definitive actions can feel a little nebulous. A couple pages succinctly explain the concept of collaborative storytelling through roleplay and give some key tips for staying engaged.

Next, seven pre-built archetypes give players an example of where to start, give examples of characteristics, and explain skills to explain how character elements work together to create synergies.

Lastly, five pages explain the core resolution mechanic and how it applies to general rolls, combat, healing, competitions, and more!

PEN’s original system involves players rolling 3d6, adding the relevant skill, checking the degree of success, and then improving with bonuses and items! Each player gets two actions per turn and a free movement to spend on their character's interactions. 

That's all there is to it! If someone wants to learn, all you have to do is hand them a character, loot three d6s out of an old game of Risk, and get started! EVERY. SINGLE. ROLL in the game follows this mechanic, so if a player can add and subtract whole numbers, they can play the whole game. 

Even attacks and defenses boil down to this simple mechanic. Players roll to attack using Strength or Accuracy and roll to defend using either Resistance or Agility. Attacks deal damage based on the degree of success verses the defender but otherwise function exactly the same as every other skill roll--no more need to explain the difference between rolls to hit, damage rolls, attack DCs, and saving throws. Then, once players roleplaying and gaming with the veterans at your table, they'll be ready to create their very own character! 

Character creation is both incredibly simple and incredibly customizable. Character creation discards races and classes (in the base system, at least) and instead gives players complete creative freedom: 

That's all there is to it, really. It's a simple process, but with 210+ unique characteristics to choose from, players have nearly endless combinations of unique abilities, backgrounds, bonuses, and weaknesses, to create over 2,600,000,000,000,000 possible characters. With all those options, players can recreate timeless archetypes or explore their own unique playstyles! 

The module also introduces items, which are based on general types. For instance, handheld ranged weapons (e.g. hand-crossbow and Colt .45) share the same profile because, relative to their settings, they serve a similar purpose. This massive simplification makes bookkeeping easy no matter where your campaign unfolds!

STANDARD ITEMS are also a special innovation in PEN. Standard items--Gear, Loot, Food, Clues, and Maps--each grant a mechanical benefit designed to streamline sticky mechanics:

This straightforward approach to items streamlines gameplay MASSIVELY and rewards players for roleplaying! It's an efficient take on expendable items that furthers PEN's balance of ease and excitement. 

Module Three opens big with a TON of flexible options for players creating their own builds. Unlike D&D and many other RPGs, PEN does not lock players into skill trees of abilities. Instead, players are given freeform systems to pursue item crafting, magic, combat maneuvers, warfare, and NPCs that fit players' own dream builds. 

To craft items, characters decide the bonuses they want their item to have, collect materials from their environment to build the item, and make a mechanics roll. Then characters use the table below to expend actions over time until the item is finished!

Magic also gives players HUGE creative latitude. Players combine elements, effects, durations, and numbers of targets to create custom spells meeting in-the-moment needs! The more powerful the spell, the harder it is to cast--and the bigger the effect! 

But why should arcane characters get all the fun?? PEN includes a list of martial maneuvers characters can add to attacks and defenses for special effects. These create powerful tactical advantages, giving martial characters an edge over even far stronger opponents by disarming, distracting, parrying, and more! Advanced characters can even combine maneuvers to create signature moves for masterfully dispatching foes. 

As characters grow in power and influence, PEN includes rules for commanding armies and gathering Supporters who follow the party around. Rules for battles elegantly sew army actions into character combat, making for epic, Lord-of-the-Rings-esq moments of heroic character actions, surrounded by carnage! 

Supporters are similarly streamlined for excitement and ease. Instead of creating detailed NPC profiles that bog turn orders and distract players with extra information, Supporters are simply sorted into types. Over 20 different Supporter types each give a single unique ability to the characters' parties, ranging from soldiers to children to chefs to lawyers. Abilities vary from attacks to role-playing benefits, and each Supporter has only one which players can order Supporters to use in a variety of situations. 

This system creates simplified, impact-oriented NPCs that spare players the headache of managing multiple profiles while giving the satisfaction of an army of followers. 

Game Mastering can be the most intimidating part of an RPG, and most manuals are written assuming the GM already has some idea of what they're doing. But what if you don't? Somebody has to learn the game and teach it, so PEN is written to make session writing as easy as character creation. 

Module Four describes the step-by-step process for running turns from the GM's perspective AND simple templates for writing exciting sessions. To start right away, PEN includes a complete one-shot for GMs to learn from and launch right into gaming! 

Also included are random tables for NPCs, traps, and other details, and steps for creating unique, balanced NPCs. These seven pages give GMs all the tools they need to tell an original story right out of the box. 

Worldbuilding is one of the most exciting parts of GMing, and PEN wants to help new GMs worldbuild well! After GMs learn how to tell a one-session story, Module Five teaches GMs how to turn their sessions into longer stories across larger worlds. Ten random tables spark GMs imagination for where players can explore, including options for governments, geography, industry, populations, values, economies, and more!

In the first section of the game you'll learn about Jude's family, crafting their parents love story and sewing the seeds of their separation, while also developing your version of Jude. 

Once you're acquainted with their history, you'll begin your story, writing diary entries from Jude's perspective as they experience Twists - major life events on the road to teen-dom; plot Traps - ways to bring their parents together and pull on their heart strings; and of course some lower-stakes down time activity. Bowling and the cinema, anyone?

You'll continue to learn about Jude's family through the discovery of Keepsakes: sentimental, storied objects that Jude discovers and uses in their schemes.

Jude's World employs a traditional Rider-Waite tarot deck to generate story prompts as well as a pair of six sided die (d6) for resolving "Traps". Playing in rounds you'll pull cards, choosing which to use to generate events, characters and artefacts in your story. As well as trying to bring their parents, Mika and Jamie, back together you'll play through important milestones on Jude's journey into teenhood and explore their family's past through the keepsakes and knickknacks you uncover around their home. As a player you'll be encouraged to investigate what happened in this relationship. Was it always doomed to fail? Or is it salvageable? And even if so, is it Jude's place to save it?
